Megan's Fitness Transformation

“I can honestly say for the first time in a long time I am finally comfortable with myself and my body.  My success at AMP has also helped me be more confident in all the other areas of my life, too!”

-Megan

I initially joined AMP because I had just moved to Boston and wanted to make a change in my fitness. I had been struggling with my weight for a while; gaining a lot, doing crash diets, losing it, and then gaining it all right back.

My biggest concern was having NO IDEA what I was doing and embarrassing myself. That was completely not the case. The intro sessions at AMP were perfect and Lindsay immediately made me feel comfortable.  I also tried Classpass for month after that to check out different fitness options but I just didn’t get the same welcoming feel at any other studios. I’ve been at AMP ever since, about a year now!

Getting started was hard at first and the most difficult part for me was being self-conscious.  But the atmosphere at AMP was so amazing and that fear quickly went away. I continued because for the first time in a long time I was starting to be comfortable with my body again and started appreciating my strengths instead of constantly seeing the problems.  The coaches helped me start focusing on building myself up rather than trying to ‘lose’.

Before AMP, my biggest fitness struggle was not sticking with anything.  I would get into a habit, start working out and eating healthy and then not stick to it for very long.  I always ended up back where I started.  Having a routine at AMP has really helped me set goals and stick to them and continue making progress. Better every day!  Having the coaches check in and be so readily available has also helped a ton!

I can honestly say for the first time in a long time I am finally comfortable with myself and my body. My success at AMP has also helped me be more confident in all other areas of my life, too!

My best piece of advice is have is to focus on small life/fitness changes and not on size or weight.  Before AMP my goal whenever I worked out was to lose weight, and it hardly ever worked.  If it did, it didn’t last very long. Now, I focus on getting stronger and being healthier and the results have made me not only more physically fit but, overall, a healthier and happier person.

I would recommend AMP because it’s not just a gym. It’s a home and it’s amazing to be a part of a team that is welcoming, encouraging and fun.

So the pictures sum up my journey pretty well.  I honesty can’t say how much weight I’ve lost since I don’t feel like I have to check the scale anymore.  But I went from a size 12 pant to a size 6.  Regardless of the size… I’m way more proud of all the awesome personal goals I’ve achieved at AMP!

I joined AMP because I liked the semi-private training model they have and I’m a person that needs an appointment to get to the gym. Otherwise, I’ll make excuses not to go (ex. my imaginary cat misses me and I need to go home to him – true story).

I’m not a skinny mini and being stared at and feeling judged by people can be really scary. Not once did I feel that way at AMP.

AMP is not a scary ‘no one knows your name’ kind of gym. It’s everything but that. Not only do the coaches say hello when you walk in the door, but the other members do too. It is such a warm and welcoming environment where everyone wants to know your name.

I am very self-conscious of my body and weight. Over the years, I have lost weight and I’ve regained weight. I live that cycle and it’s exhausting, mentally and emotionally. I joined AMP in hopes of getting physically fit. A year and a half later, I can call myself a powerlifter and am about to compete in my second RPS Powerlifting competition! And as fantastic as that is, AMP also helps me live my BEST life. We talk nutrition, we talk good habits, we talk about personal issues, we joke around, we’re silly, we sweat, and we truly care about each other. I go to AMP 2 to 3 times a week because it’s my church. My heart and soul get filled with so many good things while I’m there. And you may ask, am I still self-conscious about my weight? Yup, I am but I know my weight doesn’t define me. That right there is something I’m very proud to be able to say.

I recommend AMP because it’s a real place with real people who really care about you.
It’s friendly, warm and welcoming. You’ll get your sweat on and smile from inside out while doing it.

I love my #AMPFAMILY!

Kara's Nailed Her Goals

“I’m a happier, healthier, and more confident person than I’ve been in years.  I’m more comfortable in my own skin and it has nothing to do with numbers on the scale, and everything to do with plates on the bar…which is SO cool!”

-Kara

I could write a book on my past fitness struggles.  My life has been a constant struggle with my weight and body image.  And I’ve tried everything to fix it, from hitting the elliptical for over an hour a day and trying to run three miles a day, to starving myself and doing crunches and push-ups every night to make myself “healthy.” And none of that made me fit or more importantly feel happy.  It just made me more and more depressed and made it difficult to get out of bed to go to the gym or run or even a walk.  I would lose weight from time to time but I still didn’t feel like I was healthy or ‘fit’.  I couldn’t run any farther or faster or longer.

After trying to get in shape for years and being completely discouraged by lack of progress, a friend recommended that I get into lifting weights.  He showed me a couple of things but I still wasn’t sure I was doing it right.  When I told my dad, he said, “If you’re going to learn to lift, I want you to go to my gym.” When I got home for the summer (I was a senior in college), he had me make an appointment with Steve. At first, I was scared that I wouldn’t fit in because I was a total noob and I wouldn’t be that good.  My biggest fear, though, was more discouragement.

The first week getting started at AMP was rough. I felt a awkward and would be sore for a few days after I worked out.  But once I got going I couldn’t get enough.  It was amazing since I started feeling progress after only a few weeks and the coaches helped me be more confident in my abilities.  I’d never loved anything so much (okay, maybe dancing, but still…).  I’ve tried so many fad workouts and different types of cardio and machines and I hated them all.  But I loved what I did at AMP, even with a sore butt for three days.

Training at AMP has helped me change EVERYTHING.  I’m a happier, healthier, and more confident person than I’ve been in years. I’m more comfortable in my own skin and it has nothing to do with numbers on the scale, and everything to do with plates on the bar…which is SO cool!

Since becoming a ‘Superhero’ (They call us that… I like it.), I’ve been able to maintain a lifestyle where fitness is at the forefront, but it’s ACTUAL fitness, not unhealthy habits that I pretend are good. They have helped me learn to take care of my body the way it should be taken care of.  I’ve hit more fitness goals and found new goals I never could have hoped of achieving five years ago. The community is out-of-this-world uplifting and amazing in every way.  Everyone is so supportive and that has helped so much to get to this place. I always know the AMP Superheroes are in my corner, and that’s a powerful feeling.

Starting at AMP (or starting anything new and scary) will always be one of the most difficult things you do in your life both emotionally and physically. But IT. IS. WORTH. IT. You won’t regret it.  AMP is NOT a regular ‘gym’. I can’t recommend this place enough.  You will never feel put down or excluded.  The results are real.  It’s SO awesome.

I am so thankful every day that my dad made me join AMP last summer.  It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done.

Priyank's Journey

“When I met the coaches and the folks working out (they call them superheroes), I realized that it was not a GYM I was joining, but rather a cool hangout place where not only I will get in shape, but I will make genuine friends and a solid support system.”

-Priyank

After a recent MRI results showed that I had fatty liver and if I didn’t address it that it would be an irreversible condition that would eventually lead to liver damage.  I knew I needed to make a change so I reached out to my friends and one of them referred me to AMP.

Over the past few years I have tried many gyms and even personal trainers but none of them worked out.  Why you ask, well, I can pin point several issues and faults with them but real reason was me. I would find any excuse to justify why I wouldn’t go to classes or sessions.  Keeping this mind, AMP fitness center was already a “NO” in my books because I live in suburbs and AMP is in Boston, an hour long drive to get to the gym and any normal person would rule that out in a heart beat.  But I decided to give it a try since they had a free trial class.

It was surprisingly easy to get started because of the silly and fun family environment at AMP.  When I met the coaches and the folks working out (they call them superheroes), I realized that it was not a gym I was joiningrather a cool hangout place where I will not only get in shape but I will make genuine friends and a solid support system.

If asked what my struggles were,  the person who I was before AMP would have said, I didn’t have time.  But this new person will call old me out on that. I had time because I spend 4 hours on an average every day on the couch watching TV and doing nothing,  What I didn’t have was (1) a place where I can be out of shape and not be judged for it, (2) a trainer (coaches!) who genuinely vested in me and my health, and (3) accountability and regular check-ins to make sure I am on track and living my best life. AMP had all of those things.

I lost over 6 pounds in the first couple of months and gained 4 pounds of muscles.  I struggle with personal issue that drag me down mentally and physically but now I feel good. Exercise is a part of my life style now and eating healthy is a goal that I accomplish every day.

AMP is not a gym.  It’s a community where people care for each other and help each other out. The superheroes are normal people of all types of shape and sizes doing awesome things. Coaches are silly but attentive. They make you feel at ease.  I always wanted a big family and now I got one!!

AMP is truly one of the very few places where you learn a ton and working out is actually fun!

Lara's Journey

"AMP makes lifting weights far less scary and very approachable for anyone. There's no judgement, the community is incredibly supportive, and the trainers work hard to ensure that you are reaching your own personal goals."

I initially joined AMP because I was having hip pain after running at 10k. I had never really lifted weights before and was curious to try it out. My only workouts up till then had been spinning, running, and yoga and I was concerned that I didn't have the right body type for weightlifting.  I was also worried that I wasn't strong enough to ever really be good at it.

Getting started a lot of the focus was on my form and technique so progress felt a bit slow. Then, I suddenly reached this point where I started to see changes in my body and that was really exciting. Also, the trainers at AMP are amazing and made getting started so not intimidating and fun.  They make working out feel less like a chore and going to train at AMP has become one of the best parts of my week.

I'd say my biggest struggle was in gaining muscle. Before AMP, most of my workouts were just cardio and I never played many sports. Because of this I had never really gained a lot of muscle or felt very strong. The trainers and other members at AMP helped me to really get excited about lifting weights, and to realize that I could achieve my workout goals with patience and consistency. Since joining AMP, I'm easily stronger than I've ever been.  I can see my bicep muscles and I'm able to lift heavier weights than I ever imagined I would be able to!

I can now feel a difference in my body in almost everything that I do. Whether I'm opening a jar, standing up from a seated position, or just taking a walk, I can actually feel that my body is stronger. My form is better than it's ever been, too, so I can feel confident working out on my own and knowing that I won't likely injure myself.

Also, I've recently began training for a powerlifting meet later this year and I have a great fun fact/hobby to talk about when I talk to new people.  Neat!

I still love to run and spin but lifting weights is what has given me the biggest confidence and change in my body. I'm so glad that I was patient at the beginning and trusted the process because sticking with weight lifting was one of the best decisions I've made.

Also, initially, I wanted to try weight lifting but was turned off by things like Crossfit. However, AMP makes lifting weights far less scary and very approachable for anyone. There's no judgement , the community is incredibly supportive, and the trainers work hard to ensure that you are reaching your own personal goals. I don't just lift weights blindly—the trainers explain to me why I'm doing what I'm doing in a way that makes sense. This makes the workouts far more motivating. Also, sometimes they have free community classes with strobe lights and music.

I love this place and everyone that comes here. The coaches are so fun to work with and have all helped me so much. I do have to give a huge shoutout to Dr. Mike. He's helped me stay super motivated and determined to reach my fitness goals. Since I started to train with him, and do PT with him, I've seen huge changes in my strength and body that have been pretty life-changing. I'd feel the same way even if we weren't from the same hometown. ;-)

Josh's Journey

"Every single coach at AMP is great, fun and engaging – attentive and helpful, but not overbearing; but it was Lindsay’s nutrition program that took me over the top.  I saw such incredible success in improving my lifestyle and found myself eating better, listening to my body and looking way better without a shirt on."

I joined AMP after good my friends Molly and Dave had just started training with them and raved about the program and atmosphere.  They said it was fun, effective and reasonably priced.

I started having some lower back pain at the time and was at a physical therapy session where the practitioner blamed poor mobility from lack of exercise.  She gave me a rubber band and showed me how to do some exercises with it attached to a door. “Oh my God, these are exercises for people like my mother who have never been to the gym,” I thought. How embarrassing. It was obvious that I needed a lifestyle change.

Right away, it was great.  Steve took the time to ask all the right questions, quickly identified injuries and limitations that I hadn’t even mentioned, and introduced me to everyone on the floor.  Within a day I had a comprehensive program and was on my way.  It was too easy not to continue, as long as I just got those two classes a week into my schedule.

Every single coach at AMP is great, fun and engaging – attentive and helpful, but not overbearing; but it was Lindsay’s nutrition program that took me over the top.  I saw such incredible success in improving my lifestyle and found myself eating better, listening to my body and looking way better without a shirt on.

My biggest struggle at first was finding the time and headspace to build a healthier lifestyle – just first forming the habit to go to AMP twice a week, then the habit of doing cardio regularly, and then focusing on how to eat better.  These things happened slowly and in a series over two years. I kept thinking about something Steve told me very early on – that it takes at least a year to really cement a habit. It was the right key takeaway, because not only is it correct, but it kept me focused on challenging myself to get to the year mark.

Fast forward to now and I'm 15 pounds lighter, have no back pain, lead a more active lifestyle, am more nimble and way more able to do big jobs around the house. I eat MUCH better. And I have far greater endurance in hiking, skiing the backcountry and all other athletic endeavors. My blood pressure is lower.  Oh, and I'm much better looking in swim trunks!

Above all else, AMP is a truly special place with thoughtful, attentive and committed coaches that really do help people live their best life, and to achieve their own personal goals. They make it so easy to not only get started but awesome enough to keep going and getting better every time you train.   Since the workouts are fun, compact & efficient and since you see #gainz so quickly, it’s super easy to stay motivated and keep coming back.  The community that Steve, Lindsay and the whole AMP team have created is really wonderful and supportive.  I can't recommend them enough!
